apr 9, 1887 - Northwestern Mutual Life
Insurance constructs an office
building where Newhall House
Hotel stood.
Description:
Three years after the Newhall burned to the ground, a new landmark rose from the charred bricks on Broadway; the home office of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance. Founded in Janesville in 1857, the company had moved to Milwaukee two years later and found its fortune. By the mid-1880s, Northwestern was the seventh-largest life insurance firm in the country - a definite sign that manufacturing was not Milwaukee's only growth industry. The new home office was a conspicuous symbol of success, with six stories of carved stone, an elaborate array of arches, and a magnificent covered atrium.
