In 1884 the German-born Henry Harnischfeger and Chicago native Alonzo Pawling opened a small machine and pattern shop on S. First and Florida Streets. It was a standard job shop, repairing broken machinery for some customers and fabricating new machines from the drawings of others. Electric overhead cranes for industry became their specialty.
