Frederick, a former lake captain, took charge of the Best Brewery in 1864. With a nose for quality and a flair for promotion, Captain Pabst pushed the Best Brewery to the front of the pack, it was Milwaukee's largest beer producer in 1868 and America's largest in 1874.
