In 1857 the elegant Newhall House crowned the corner of Michigan Street and Broadway. Built by wheat magnate Daniel Newhall for a reported $275,000, it featured halls of "tesselated marble" and more than 300 guest rooms. It boasted having both hot and cold running water and fully equipped bathrooms. It was reported to be the finest hotel west of New York City.
