dec 29, 1688 - Glorious Revolution
Description:
The people of England were glad to bring back the monarchy when they welcomed Charles II back to England after Cromwell's rule. However his Catholic successor James II proved to be less popular with both his subjects and the Parliament which he ignored. Parliament decided to crown a new, Protestant monarch so they chose William, the stadtholder of the Netherlands. He was the husband of James' Protestant daughter Mary, so the choice was clear. By acting in the people's, and their own, best interest, Parliament set a precedent with William's coronation. A precedent which stated that ultimately, English monarchs must bes acquiescent to Parliament's decisions.
