jul 14, 1789 - Storming of the Bastille

Description:

In Paris, inspired by the American revolution and the economic depression that the French monarchy was faced with, massive uprisings began in bread lines. Louis XVI was forced to call the Estates General, with the third estate of commoners breaking off to form the National Assembly. In the summer of 1789, with the dismissal of Louis XVI’s finance minister who had kept bread prices down with a price ceiling as well as the entrance of troops into the city, the commoners revolted, and stormed the Bastille, looting weapons. This marked the beginning of the French Revolution, and set the tone for the bloody and radical nature of the revolution.
