jan 7, 1660 - Restoration of Charles II in England

Description:

As the son of Charles I, Charles, the Prince of Wales was forced to flee England at the end of the Civil War in 1651. After spending many years in exile in the Netherlands, the people of England began to become displeased with Cromwell's protectorship. Upon his death in 1658, the weak government that followed was reason enough to invite Charles II back to reclaim his throne. His reign marked a new interest in fashion, arts, and the sciences through his patronage of all three. This was mainly done in competition with his rival in France, Louis XIV. Charles II's accession to the throne marked a new period in the English monarchy where they truly saw themselves as being subject to laws and the will of Parliament/the people.
