aug 14, 1945 - Milwaukeeans celebrate
VJ Day downtown
Description:
Everyone had friends, relatives, or neighbors at the front, and news of battlefield causalities came with distressing frequency.
World War II, everyone knew, was a struggle to the death. The fighting in Europe ended on May 7, 1945, but millions were still in harm's way. With Japan's surrender on August 14, the joy was general. Tens of thousands filled the streets of downtown Milwaukee, drunk on legal beer and victory.
