Joni attended a “Family Conference” in 1990 sponsored by the federal government and the National Council on Disability, of which she was a member. She came back to Joni and Friends, shared her story and challenged the ministry to do better. A small team was put together to plan a family getaway. Everyone agreed a family getaway should be a Christ-centered environment that shares God’s love and demonstrates how everyone is created in His image. It should be a place that families would feel loved, ministered to, and safe from hurtful looks and comments. Family getaway should also be a place to relax, network, build friendships, share hurts and victories, and give and receive encouragement.
