jan 31, 1846 - Milwaukee is
granted a charter
Description:
With some resistance from East Siders, probably because it required them to pay the lion's share of bridge costs, a city charter was approved by local voters through a landslide victory in early January 1856. The territorial legislature approved the charter on January 31, 1846 and so, the city of Milwaukee was formed more than two years before Wisconsin became a state. Salomon Juneau became the first mayor of Milwaukee and by that time it had a population of 9,500 people.
