feb 10, 1555 - Peace of Augsburg

Description:

a treaty signed between Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and the forces of the Schmalkaldic League that officially ended the Schmalkaldic Wars between the Holy Roman Empire and France and that allowed each state within the Holy Roman Empire to choose to be Catholic or Lutheran.
German Protestant Lutheran princes had organized themselves into a defensive alliance known as the Schmalkaldic League; France also made an alliance with the League. In 1546, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V became free of international wars and struck the Schmalkaldic League. Neither side achieved complete victory and the Peace of Augsburg was a compromise to end the war.
