Description:
- Chinese tradition of women binding their feet with silk so they will grow into the desired shape (having perfect feet was valued by menand helped in finding a husband)
- became more widespread; more in upper/elite class at first rather than peasantry; girls started footbinding at age 5-6
- perfect shape= "lotus petal" or "golden lily"
- very painful and limited movemnet of women; allowed husands to limit them to certain parts of the house (limit what they can do career-wise)
- helped patriarchy grow and women's rights to deteriorate
