Member of prominent north Chinese family that made a marriage alliance with a Zhou ruler through his daughter. He seized the throne from his son-in-law, won support of nomadic peoples and united China in 598. Wendi lowered taxes, established granaries, and kept food prices low. Killed by his son, Yangdi.
