jan 1, 1767 - Potawatomi dominate
Western Lake Michigan
Description:
Preceded by the native populations of mound builders, Winnebago (Ho Chunk) and Menominee, the Potawatomi pushed out of lower Michigan around the 1940s, became the most influential tribe in eastern Wisconsin by the late 1600s. Native settlements in the area included Potawatomi, Sauk, Ottawa, Chippewa, and Menominee families. Most were settled on the high bluffs of the Milwaukee River. The name of Milwaukee was created by these native groups but the original pronunciation and spelling were lost as soon as Europeans tried to pronounce it.
