jan 6, 1815 - The Second Barbary War

Description:

US, Britain and Holland attack Algiers and threaten to destroy Tripoli. This spurs them into a peace where over 1k Christian slaves are returned and there are no more tributes. A tribute is a fee paid in order to protect a home from pirates. It is actually cheaper for Europe to go to war than to pay a tribute, but it did have benefits: they could pool their resources against a common enemy, defend colonial empires, and piracy was good for business.
