jan 5, 1813 - Captain Ross's Cruise
Description:
Captain Ross led the Dart, a British ship, out of St. Johns, New Brunswick, making it the most impressive engagement in the war of 1812. The dart was a merchant sip that the British had captured and converted, which was common at the time. The ship carried a large crew which split the prize, with 12 pound guns and 2 9 pound guns. These guns could instantly kill a whole ship. In the cruise of 1813 the crew captured 12 vessels and in October, they took the Americans travelling from Maine to NY. They were witnessed to have been met with no resistance, and the Dart was eventually captured by privateers on the opposite side, which was a major achievement.
