jul 2, 1990 - Julio Rivera Killed

Description:

On July 2, 1990, Julio Rivera was lured to the schoolyard and murdered by 3 skinheads who sought to "reclaim" their neighborhood from gays. They bashed his skull with a hammer and finished him off with a knife. The case was assigned to a detective on vacation and his death would have gone unnoticed had it not been for the pressure put forth on the NYPD by the local gay community. It was deemed a hate crime and all suspects were apprehended and convicted of murder. The impact of his death influenced many to become more active in the gay community and eventually led to the establishment of the neighborhood's first gay pride parade. A sign that reads "Julio Rivera Corner" is now present at the intersection commemorating Julio Rivera.
