feb 10, 1800 - Election of Thomas Jefferson

Description:

Even though the Federalists managed to get the new Constitution ratified, they were still not satisfied by the state of America. The Federalists were not happy with Thomas Jefferson running for the presidency and attacked him in efforts to regain power. Thomas Jefferson was the first Democratic-Republican president, and the election resulted in the first transfer of power between parties. When the Alien and Sedation Acts expired, Jefferson pardoned those serving sentences. Financially, he kept most of Hamilton’s system and also reduced the national debt and balanced the budget.
