4h 37min, apr 23, 1739 y - Stono Rebellion

Description:

Although the settlers were able to create an alliance between each other, they had no way of controlling their slaves. The Catholic governor of Spain promised to free runaway slaves, and when this promise was not upheld, the slaves rebelled near the Stono river. When they rebelled, the slaves killed their owners and destroyed their homes along with beating drums to attract followers. The South Carolina militia eventually stopped the rebellion, killing forty-four slaves in the process. The Stono Rebellion led to more restricting laws for slaves and also the decrease of importations of slaves. Key Concept 2.2.11
