Description:

The British became the premier naval power after defeating the Spanish Armada, and shortly after they began permanently colonizing the New World. The first British settlement was named Jamestown and was initiated by King James I, who gave the Virginia Company of London a charter. The main goal of the colony was to trade with the native people there. The settlement was made up of all men, and not many survived the first nine months, largely due to famine, disease, and the lack of will to work. Key Concept 2.1.1
