Description:
After gaining the Spanish gained control of some of the Americas, the Portuguese began to seek areas that they could take control over. They began trading slaves to islands off Africa and sent them to sugar plantations. They were the first New World European colonizers to participate in the slave trade. The Portuguese sent the slaves from West Africa to sugar plantations and shortly after became a nation that thrived on the production and trade of sugar. The slaves brought over from Africa brought diseases that decimated the native population. Key Concept 1.2.11
