nov 18, 1735 - The Great Awakening Key Concept 3.2,I

Description:

The formal education for European ministers and priests would begin to rub the American religion the wrong way. The Great Awakening occurred during the 1730s to the 1740s because the American religion had started to see a decline in attendances and many ministers believed that Christianity lacked individual connections and emotions. It was witnessing the venerability of Christianity that made ministers act by pushing for a religious change that would place many ministers in open-air congregations, most without any formal training, and not bound by any doctrines. The older, aristocratic priests all underwent training to learn from the Latin texts and taught those educated enough to understand the words that came straight from the Bible. The open-air congregations allowed people from all walks of life to join in and listen about how they connected to God both individualistically and emotionally. The rebirth of the American religion allowed for the American people to unite under a single colonial identity that would work together to solve common problems.
