-Japan attacks and occupies Manchuria and coastal China
-Japanese army = modern and well equipped
-GMD army = outdated and unprepared
-Japanese objective = take all of coastal China and instal "overloads" in regions// vying for regional hegemony
-US supports GMD and offers money and weapons to fight Japanese but GMD uses it to fight communists
-Kaishek Objective = save US resources to attack communists bc they are the primary adversary
