On may 7 1915, a German U-boat torpedoed and sunk the British ocean liner the RMS Lusitania, with was heading to Liverpool, England from New York. The sinking of the Lusitania led to American protests against Germany because, during the attack, 1198 of 1959 people were killed, which was against the law. By law, the U-boat had to warn the ship before so that the people on board have time to escape.
