Made it so the ideas of the Civil Rights Act couldn’t be repealed if the Democrats took over
- All people born in the US are citizens
- “Equal protection of laws” “due process of law” (states)
- Both states and the federal government now required to uphold the rights of citizens
- Disqualified former Confederate political leaders from holding either state or federal offices
- Repudiated the debts of the defeated governments of the Confederacy
- Penalized the states who kept eligible people from voting (one less person in House)
