jan 2, 1721 - The Climax of Black Bart

Description:

Bartholomew Roberts was known as one of the most successful pirates in history. He destroyed more than 40 ships, taking more than Blackbeard and Captain Kidd combined. He began as a carpenter for ships, and began piracy when he was aboard a slave ship that was captured in West Africa by Captain Howell Davis, a Welsh pirate. He was brought upon the pirate crew for his skills and took the to life instantly, only on the ship for 2 weeks before rising to the ranks and replacing Howell as captain after he was killed by Portuguese. His first act as captain was to return to Portugal and kill everyone he found, then setting out onto the Coast of Brazil, and finally making it towards Nova Scotia. He was reported to make crews strip, raid everything, and even toss people overboard. He had a band on ship that would play as he entered a port. This was done to avoid as much fighting as possible and give the people on land time to evacuate. He was the most stereotypical pirate in terms of dress, wearing a crimson waistcoat and a feather in his hat. He was very religious and never drank thinking that religion would help his crew. He had two flags, one for Barbados and one for Martinique, representing the two governors that put a price on his head. He made his way back to Cape Breton, and the governor is afraid he will take it, as it is one of the biggest French fisheries. He takes many vessels and tortures the crews since the governor does not immediately surrender, and makes his way to Martinique. Here he encounters a French ship, finding the governor on it, and hangs him. This is the ac that get both the French and English on his bad side. In 1721 he heads to Africa to raid slave ports and ships coming to purchase slaves, but at this point, the Queen's ship has caught up to him, and on February 10, 1722 his crew is hung at the Cape Coast Castle in Ghana. His crew threw his body overboard before the navy could board at his request, as he did not want to be hung or gibbetted. Around 40 were hung.
