may 27, 1966 - “When the Saints Go Marching” ‒ Lee Kok Liang [Short Story]

Description:

It is a story about Kung Ming, a man who is unable to control his sensual nature. He has sexually assaulted his own sister in- law, Siew Choo, causing her to hang herself and his wife who is affected by the incident, to go mad. This incident happens during the celebration of independence of his nation. Due to his guilt, he takes care of his wife on his own instead of sending her to a mental institution. Ironically, independence is supposed to symbolise liberation, but for him, it symbolises his predicament of guilt resulted from his past actions.
