Part of the counter reformation. Its goals were to reform the catholic church and reconcile with the Protestants. Reconciliation made impossible since Catholics gave equal validity to Scripture and tradition, where Protestants believed in ‘ Sola Scriptura’. The council reaffirmed the seven sacraments, transubstantiation and suppressed pluralism and simony (the selling of church offices).
