In 1900 .02% of all deaths in the US were caused by Tuberculosis, in fact 1/7th of all people have died of Tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis was so common in the US that sanitoriums and tenement houses began to pop up.

The conditions of tenement houses were terrible for people with the disease. They were forced to live in very close quarters and had strange treatments to attempt to cure the disease. One treatment was called plombage, where pingpong balls were inserted into the patients lungs so their lungs wouldn't collapse.

Coughing up blood or mucus, chest pains,
