sep 30, 1820 - Missouri Compromise

Description:

Missouri Compromise (1820):

This compromise allowed for admission of Missouri as a state and helped lead to the American Civil War. James Tallmadge tried to include an anti-slavery amendment to Missouri’s legislation which cause a large debate over slavery and the government’s right to restrict slavery. The amendment didn’t let more slaves into Missouri and freed those already there at the age of 25. The House of Representatives (the more-populous North) passed this, but failed in the Senate. Discourse was caused by a genuine conviction that slavery was morally wrong but economic reasons persuaded some to support slavery.
A “solution” was formed in the way of the Missouri Compromise 36°30° line, where states below the line could have slaves, but slavery was banned for those above the line. This essentially split the country cleanly in two and fueled the coming civil war.
