Description:

- U.S. Public Health Service conducted a 40-year study on effects of untreated syphilis on mostly poor, uneducated black men in Macon County, Alabama
- 600 black men (399 with syphilis, 201 who did not have the disease)
- Subjects were not given adequate medical treatment
- Even when penicillin became the drug of choice for syphilis in 1947, researchers did not offer it to the subjects
