Manson, after hearing Helter Skelter decided he had to commit a crime so shocking that everyone would pay attention and leave clues to make people belive it was African Americans who commited the crimes. Late in the night on Aug. 8, 1969, Manson dispatched four family members — Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Charles "Tex" Watson and Linda Kasabian — to the Tate home in the Hollywood hills. Terry Melcher, a well-known record producer who once denied Manson a record deal once lived in that house.
