jan 1, 1550 - Jesuits Begin Entering China
Description:
With an increase in European trade at the Manila port came Christian missionaries, with Jesuits focusing on the elite Chinese. They were unique in that they adapted Catholicism to fit Chinese tradition - missionaries studied Chinese traditions, culture, and languages to make Catholicism accessible to them. Emperor Kangxi supported the Jesuits, but controversy grew later and by the 18th century, Catholics in China were persecuted.
