dec 7, 1494 - Treaty of Tordesillas
Description:
Treaty of Tordesillas (1494):
Spain and Portugal came to an agreement that involved the newly discovered lands in the Americas. Discovered by explorers such as Columbus, these new lands had many claimants. Rulers Ferdinand and Isabella got help from the pope to prohibit the Portuguese and others from taking the land. The Spanish-born Pope Alexander VI set up a line of demarcation that allowed Portuguese explorers land that was east of the line, and the Spanish got exclusive rights to all lands, including most of the Americas, that were west of the line.
