mar 11, 1959 - A Raisin In the Sun debuts on Broadway

Description:

Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In the Sun. This play was groundbreaking in the world of theatre and American culture as it debuted an almost entirely Black cast and documented the racialized realities of socio-economic mobility in the United States. It was declared "Best Play of the Year" by the New York Drama Critic's Circle. The play was before its time in its exploration of themes such as race, class-struggle, gender, decolonization and Black feminism which would become the impetus for many of the 1968 movements.
