his first fashion show
— Martin Margiela SS90
Description:
During Raf's internship with Walter Van Beirendonck, he brought Raf Simons together to Paris Fashion Week to watch Martin Margiela's first fashion show — Spring Summer 1990.
As mentioned in Business of Fashion, Raf Simons mentioned that he ended up gatecrashing with Walter Van Beirendonck. It was his first fashion show he ever attended. He always perceived fashion shows as shows with glamorous and major productions but during Martin Margiela's Spring Summer 1990 show, there was not even a floor. It looked like a trashy backyard!
Raf did mentioned as well that he immediately expected something extraordinary to take place once the models began to walk out. They looked angelic and almost alien-like. He was in awe by everything that he saw and even started crying!
As what he said " I felt so embarrassed. I was like ' Oh God, look at the ground, look at the ground, everyone's going to see that you are crying — like how stupid it is to be crying at a fashion show! " After he looked around, he found out that half the audience was already in tears.
When Raf was a student, he always thought that fashion had always been a little superficial, only to be filled with the glitz and glamour. He mentioned that this show changed everything on how he perceived fashion. Once he walked out of the show, he thought to himself saying " That is what I am going to do! ".
The Martin Margiela Spring Summer 1990 show was the reason Raf Simons became a fashion designer.
