jan 1, 1885 - Rabies

Description:

Rabies is a viral disease with the scientific name of Lyssavirus. It can affect the central nervous system which leads to inflammation in the brain.
This infectious agent is found in nature such as bat droppings and the air from caves bats live in. Humans are not the only host for Rabies. Many animals can be infected with the virus. Common reservoirs for this agent are bats, foxes, and skunks. The disease is transmitted from animal to animal or from animal to human through saliva through a bite or scratch. Some things that put people at risk for Rabies are traveling to developing countries, living in an area that is populated with bats, living in a rural area with lots of wildlife, frequent camping, and being below the age of fifteen. The symptoms of Rabies are fever, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle weakness, and tingling. The treatment option for Rabies is through a physician. It includes being given rabies immunoglobin, a series of five injections, and a doctor or nurse cleaning the bite area for fifteen minutes or more. There are a few preventable measures that can be taken to avoid being infected by rabies. There are vaccines available to both human and pets, avoid contact with wild animals, and prevent bats from entering or coming near living areas. In 2015 there was only 3 human cases of Rabies and 5,508 cases within the US and Puerto Rico. Back in 2014 there was only 1 human case and 6,033 rabid animal cases. Although there were more human cases, the animal cases decreased great amount bringing the reported cases down by 8.7%. Asia and tropical regions tend to be concentrated areas containing the infectious disease.
