Description:
First discovered in 1973 in Melbourne, IT is the leading cause of gastroenteritis in children.
Symptoms:
Severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and dehydration (dizziness, decreased urination, dry mouth)
Treatment:
There are vaccines for the virus. The main treatment is supportive care for the infected.
History:
-1998 RotaShield vaccine releases (withdrawn due to health concerns in 1999)
-2006 RotaTeq becomes available and recommended by Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices
-2008 FDA licenses another vaccine, Rotarix
