Description:

In 1752 is the first clinical case of anthrax.

Symptoms:
-Cutaneous: group of small itchy blisters/bumps, swelling around sore, painless sore (ulcer) with black center appearing after blisters (most often on face, neck, arms, or hands)
-Inhalation: fevers and chills, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness or confusion, cough, nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, headache, drenching sweats, extreme tiredness, body aches
-Gastrointestinal: fever and chills, swelling of neck or neck glands, sore throat, painful swallowing, hoarseness, nausea and vomiting especially bloody, diarrhea especially bloody, headache, flushing and red eyes, stomach pain, fainting, swelling of abdomen
-Injection: fever and chills, blisters around injection site, skin sore with black center (same as cutaneous), swelling around sore, abscesses under skin or in muscle where drug was injected

Treatment:
There are antibiotics and a vaccine used to avoid the spread and infection of anthrax

History:
-2001 Anthrax attacks “Amerithrax”- senators and news agencies were sent white powder containing anthrax spores. 22 people were infected and 5 died.
-1752 - first clinical description of anthrax by Maret
-1877 - Koch’s Postulate, bacillus anthracis was used
-1881 - Pasteur develops first anthrax vaccine for animals
-1944 - penicillin used to treat anthrax
-1950s - first human anthrax vaccine, 92.5% effective in cutaneous infection
-1970 - new vaccine released, more or less the same one we use today
-2010 - new form of anthrax discovered in the UK and Germany, injection anthrax
-1914-18 - Germany used anthrax infected cattle to try and infect the Allied Nations
-1979 - deadly outbreak in USSR
