jan 1, 595 - Marriage with Khadijah
Description:
The Prophet (s) became known as صادق الأمين. through his multiple organic interactions with people. He interacted with so many people and did so much good that he built a reputation of becoming known as صادق الأمين. It was because of this reputation that Khadeeja bint Khuwalid became interested in the Prophet (s).
She is Khadija bint Khuwalid bin Asad bin Abdul Aza bin Qusay bin Kilab. She was a very pious and pure woman. She was also highly desired for marriage. She was known as الطاهرة the chaste and العفيفة the virtuous and honest.
She had been married twice before and was a very wealthy lady because she inherited wealth from her past husbands.
Her first husband was Hind, and she had a child named Hind (boy) with him. Her second husband was Atiq, and she had another child with him named Hind (girl).
She had three lifetimes worth of wealth. Khadeeja did not engage in business directly, rather she paid someone else to engage in business on her behalf. She would send caravans to Yemen and Sham. She heard of the Prophet's trustworthiness and wanted to hire him. She said she would give him double the commission. Furthermore, Abu Talib did not want the Prophet to travel, and Khadeeja spoke to Abu Talib directly. Prophet (s) agreed to the job. Khadeeja sent her servant, Maysara, with him.
On the journey, the Prophet rested under a tree. A monk named Nester rushed out and said he is a prophet because only prophets sit under this tree. Nester advised everyone not to leave him. He is a Prophet and the last prophet. Maysara said there clouds giving constant shade to him. When they returned to Mecca, Maysara gave all these details to Khadeeja. Khadeeja was so impressed by the Prophet's honesty. She received a high return on her investment.
One narration states that Khadeeja sought advice from Waraqah bin Nawfal, her uncle. Waraqah said this person is a special servant of Allah, and he encouraged her to pursue the marriage. Khadeeja sent one of her friends, Nafeesa/Nufaisa, to send a proposal to the Prophet. The Prophet replied that he has only seen honesty and truth from her.
With this, the marriage was performed. Her uncle Amr bin Asad married her to the Prophet (s). The Prophet (s) was 25 years old, and she was 28 years old. Other opinions say she was 40 or 45. Age 28 is a stronger opinion.
The Mahr was 20 goats or 20 camels. This was a moderate amount. Some would give 200 camels or 200 goats. The mahr is a sign of gratitude and happiness. You should not give so little that the other person is unhappy or offended by it.
She is a very intelligent woman. She asked for advice and investigated before sending a proposal. It was not blind infatuation.
