First discovered in 1885 by Theodore Escherich
-O157:H7 is the deadliest strain.
Symptoms
- diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, bloody urine, and loss of appetite. These symptoms can lead to kidney failures and death.
-1-10 days of incubation after being infected.
-After appearance of symptoms, it usually last 5-10 days
Treatment:
Mostly just fluids and rest to treat an infection.
History:
-1982: E. coli O157:H7 was first recognized as a human pathogen during an investigation into an outbreak. It resulted to hemorrhagic colitis related with consumption of hamburgers from a fast food chain restaurant.
-1993: Major outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in the Northwest associated with consumption of undercooked ground beef.
