5 young men in San Francisco are found to have a rare lung infection called Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, something they normally wouldn't have. By the end of the year over 200 gay men were found to have severe immunodeficiency. It's believed in the following years to be a gay disease, causing it to be called GRIDS or Gay-Related Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
