jan 1, 1973 - Rotavirus

Description:

Rotavirus is viral and causes gastroenteritis. It is found in stool and transmitted fecal-orally. Humans shed the most rotavirus. It is transmitted via fomites, hands, and/or contaminated food. Poor hygiene and handwashing raises your risk of Ratovirus. Especially common with young children and infants, as well as within families. Symptoms are severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and dehydration (dizziness, decreased urination, dry mouth). There is no medicine, just supportive care. Rehydration is especially important. Oral hydration and in severe cases, intravenous fluids may be given.
The best way to prevent rotavirus is good hygiene, hand washing, and proper food handling. There are two licensed vaccines for infants given in two or three doses orally before they are 8 months. Rotavirus is the leading cause of diarrheal disease among infants and children. According to the CDC each year more than 400,000 children visit the doctor, 200,000 visit the ER, 55,000-70,000 hospitalizations, and 20-60 deaths (children under 5).
