on this day the USSR launched the world's first man made satellite into orbit. the successful launch of Sputnik 1 is known as the starting point of the space race between the USA and the USSR. while the USA was making plans for it's own satellite the USSR took the country by storm by getting there first. Sputnik 1 was in the shape of a beach ball and weighed 183.9 pounds. it was designed by a group of Russian scientist led by Mikhail Tikhonravov and the NII-4 military institute.Added to timeline:
