Description:

Leopold II of Austria (Marie Antoinette's brother) and Frederick William II of Prussia had issuedthe Declaration of Pilnitz, warning that there would be severe consequences if the revolutionaries were to harm the royal family. This enraged the National Assembly, which consisted mainly of Jacobins, into a nationalistic frenzy to wage a "war of liberation" against Austria. Thus began the War of the First Coalition, which lasted from 1792 to 1797.
