jun 29, 1054 - The schism between Eastern and Western Christian Church (1054)

Description:

The Schism between Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic happened as a result of tensions between different sections of the church. It began with disagreements on worshipping and doctrines, and this soon spiraled out of control. Another issue that arose was that of iconoclasm, which took place in the Byzantine Empire. Western Europe was filled with people that could not read or write, and the use of icons and illustrations enabled them to further understand the religion. The Pope and
orthodox leaders basically banned each other from the church, and thus 2 branches were created. This happened in 1054 and was basically an internal power struggle. (3.1)
