feb 21, 1972 - Nixon Visit
Description:
Wanting to end the Vietnam War and put pressure on the Soviet Union, President Nixon decided to visit the PRC in 1972 and end the quarter century of non-communication. Shocking the world, he met with Premier Zhou Enlai in Shanghai for a week to negotiate nuclear limitations and bring peace in the East. In addition to making substantial progress in easing US-China relations, the most significant agreement was the US’s acknowledgement that Taiwan was part of China.
