Comprised of Mao’s third wife Jiang Qing, Wang Hongwen, Zhang Chunqiao, and Yao Wenyuan, they became the most powerful radicals in the CCP during the Cultural Revolution. Manipulating mass media and utilizing their close standing with Mao, they were able to gain power and influence the youth to overthrow moderate officials. After Mao’s death, they lost their power and were later put on trial in 1980.
