may 11, 1966 - Cultural Revolution

Description:

Mao Zedong, believing that current party leaders were straying from the revolutionist ideals, spurred on the Cultural Revolution in 1966. It closed schools and encouraged the youth to rise against those revisionist leaders. They formed Red Guard paramilitary groups and escalated in violence, and caused the Chinese to become disillusioned over the ideals that Mao pushed for. Power struggles occurred in high government until Mao’s death, resulting in the end to the Cultural Revolution in 1976.
