who invite attack," said Mahrer.
"If we could do a study on all
Miami women, we could
probably predict the ones which
would at some time be involved
in a rape situation," he added.
-Alvin Mahrer, Miami Professor of Psychology
Description:
This statement was spoken by Professor Alvin Mahrer, who was a professor and director of clinical psychology at Miami University. In 1970 Mahrer was a guest speaker at the Association of Women Students' panel on rape and rape defense. Mahrer was accompanied on the panel by three other men including Paul Shumacher-the Miami Health Center Director and Gynocologist at the time, Wallace Miller- the Security superintendent, and Bob Ellis- a local self-defense school instructor. Mahrer was cited by the Miami Student claiming the above. The panel was intended to be an orientation of sorts; AWS sought to educate female students on the reasons behind rape and how to avoid it. During the panel, the four men told women to avoid certain people, certain clothing types and certain areas off-campus. Mahrer was also cited stating that women are sometimes "rape-prone," depending on the relationship they had with their father as an adolescent and that some women had subconscious desires to be, "beaten or mauled."
